Temple History
The Kashi Vishwanath Temple has a history that dates back several centuries. Originally built in ancient times, the temple has been destroyed and rebuilt many times by different rulers. The current structure was rebuilt by Queen Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore in the 18th century. Over the years, it has stood as a symbol of resilience, devotion, and eternal faith in Lord Shiva. According to Hindu mythology, Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple stands where Lord Shiva himself resides in the form of Vishweshwara the ruler of the universe. It is believed that Kashi is the first place where light emerged after creation. Legends say that even during cosmic destruction (Pralay), Kashi remains untouched, protected by Lord Shiva. The temple is mentioned in many ancient texts including the Skanda Purana and Kashi Khanda. It is also said that Lord Shiva whispered the Taraka Mantra into the ears of the dying here, granting them salvation. Devotees believe that visiting the Kashi Vishwanath Temple once in life fulfills all desires and washes away sins. This eternal city and the temple are known as the spiritual capital of India and hold a powerful place in Sanatan Dharma.
